GALLE, SRILANKA: Such an interesting day of Test cricket was seen today at Galle International Stadium when West Indies player Chris Gayle hit his triple ton against Srilanka on second day of the first test match today. He passed his previous best of 317 runs on Tuesday.

Chris Gayle became only the fourth batsman to get two Test triple centuries. He scored his career-best 333 on just 437 deliveries hitting 34 fours and 9 sixes, before being bowled by Mendis. Gayle fell short of Brian Lara’s world record of 400 but joined the former West Indian batsman, Donald Bradman of Australia and Virender Sehwag of India as the only players to score two triple-hundreds.

Chris Gayle helped his team post a massive 580 runs in their first innings before West Indies declared on 580-9 after tea on the second day. West Indies posted their highest Test total against Sri Lanka, surpassing 477-9 declared in St Lucia in 2003.

One of Srilankan spinner Ajantha Mendis’ finished with 6-169 from 59 overs. Sri Lanka lost Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck but recovered to reach 54-1 at the close. Andre Russell got Dilshan with his second ball in Tests. Captain Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 33, while Tharanga Paranavitana was 10 not out at the end of the day.
